When debutante Wallis Simpson was growing up, she devoted her teenage daydreams to one man the future King of England, Prince Edward. But instead she marries a pilot, who turns out to be a dominating bully of a man. Edward, in the meantime, is busy fulfilling his royal duties - as well as some extra-curricular ones involving married women. Until the day he is introduced to a very special woman, Wallis Simpson.
The Shadow Queen is a dramatic novel that crosses continents and provides a unique insight into one of history's most charismatic and multi-faceted women.

I was really intrigued to read this book since I knew very little of Wallis Simpson. Turns out I still don't know that much about her. After I finished reading this I was very disappointed to read the author's note about how many of the main characters were fabricated and how she took quite a bit of artistic license with the story . Just a quick glance on Wikipedia confirmed that a lot of it was written to flatter, and completely romanticized the main character. Its a good read, but I feel like it's a stretch to call it historical fiction. I'm glad I bought this on sale, I probably would have rated it lower had I paid full price.Product details

The Shadow Queen A Novel of Wallis Simpson Duchess of Windsor (Audible Audio Edition) Rebecca Dean Liza Ross Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews
I've always been a bit fascinated with Wallis Simpson and was eager to read her story. This book is easy to read - flowing easily (with a few slower portions) perhaps as a historical novel might.
I have a far better idea of what her life was like and she may really have been but I wished for more. I had hoped that there would be more information about her love and life with Edward but it felt like this part of her life was short shrifted . None-the-less this book was a fascinating look at the woman won the heart of a king - a real life fairy tale - the book just ended too soon.
Well worth the read!
I didn’t really know much about Wallis Simpson other than having heard of her and her relationship with the King of England, so I enjoyed the historical aspects of the novel as well as the author’s interpretation of her life. I had a hard time putting it down. I would be interested in the sequel.
I loved reading about Wallis and how she developed from her childhood to adulthood and how her background and people and events in her life shaped her thinking. You read so much about her life with "David" but this really explored how her childhood was and what affected her thinking and molded her choices in life. It was an informative read.
I enjoyed this book very much but was very disappointed to learn that some key people in the book are fictional. Otherwise, it was very good.
This was not a novel about the Duchess of Windsor but the early life of Wallis Simpson before she became infamous .
It ended just as we were getting to the interesting bit !
The writers style is not compelling (and poor grammar) and I found myself speed reading pages to try to get to the momentum..it arrived with the last sentence of the last page
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After each chapter I couldn't wait to see what would happen to this lady in the next phase of her life. I understand this was fiction based on Wallis Simpson's life before marrying Edward. The protocol, the fashions, the different scenes set in this novel were fascinating. As a big fan of historical fiction this story took me back to the early 1900's & the social scene of that time. The author shows an underside of this strong woman's personality. I've always been curious of Wallis' personality that would encourage a king to abdicate his throne.
Captivating, compelling historical novel, even if you are familiar with the overall story.
Wallis was born into a prominent family, but her father died young. Her father's brother supported her, but her uncle and her mother did not get along, for good reason. Visiting her cousin in Florida during the early years of naval aviation, she met and married an up-and-coming officer, who was deeply flawed. Wallis had been idolizing Prince Edward since she was a teenager and almost got presented to him in San Diego.
After a divorce, she married a dual US-UK citizen and moved to England, where she finally met Prince Edward and they fell in love. The story ends before his abdication.
One of the things I really liked was that the author explains at the end which of the key characters were fictitious. The book did mention a Crowne Plaza Hotel before the first was established, but that is just a nit.
